LONDON - Modern health diagnostics still relies on many methods from last century, from blood analysis to computer tomographic scanning - which are not affordable for much of the world’s population. Novel methods powered by artificial intelligence (AI) are becoming more widely available, however, and they are often available to anyone with a smartphone.
One of the most effective - and cheap - of these novel health screening methods involves tongue selfies combined with smart watch biomarkers. The human tongue is an organ that reflects the clinicopathological conditions of the body, with parts of the tongue providing hints as to the condition of corresponding internal organs. Multiple studies, from traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) to modern AI-driven practices, have proven the linkage between changes in tongue appearance and health conditions - including specific predictions of diseases from diabetes to gastric precancerous conditions.1,2,3,4,5 This article provides an overview of AI-driven screening of tongue changes in the context of health conditions dynamics to explore the feasibility of providing non-invasive methods of measuring health risks.
